The Solar Question: Do We Need It?

Solar and RV/Camping go hand in hand these days for a large percentage of campers. Whereas, a few years ago, not so much. Folks would travel to their favorite or new to them locations like State Parks, COE's and both public and private campgrounds. Most if not all would provide, electricity, water and sometimes sewer connections. Having all or a couple of these would allow for a comfortable stay. Fast forward to present day and you'll find a large contingent of RV/Camping travelers are now opting for the Off-Grid, BLM and Dispersed camping. Here we have no water, no electric and no sewer, other than what ya bring with you. This then bring us back to the question: Solar: Do we need it?

If the above off grid camping scenario applies even for a here a stay - there a stay? Then absolutely solar is needed. If you happen to really enjoy camping off the beaten path more than staying in campgrounds with services, then a solar system is an absolute must have. How much solar, how much battery? Many a variable play into answering that. An average solar system would have you with 800-1000w of solar panels, 200-400AH Lithium battery bank and the associated devices to handle the charging and inverting of the 12V to 110v for those appliances.

Now, the basic system will cost you $3k-$5k if you have a Pro do the equipment provision and labor, but could certainly come in way under that number in a DIY. I happened to choose the latter and did everything myself saving a lot of $$. But there is something to having someone else do all of the heavy lifting for sure.
